Deciduous features a live hydrophone (underwater microphone) stream of humpback whales from Puako, Hawaii and draws on user data from geo-located sound walks created for COP21 in Paris in December 2015. The sound walks explored natural environments across the world, allowing delegates to discover the Amazon River Dolphin in central Brazil, pilgrims chanting at dusk on the banks of the Pamba in southern India, elusive howler monkeys hidden in iconic locations throughout Paris or Indigenous elders speaking about iconic rivers across Australia. Which sounds drew people deeper into the sound map? Which sounds disappeared and dissolved as the installation expanded? The Paris Agreement achieved at COP21 was just the first step in what needs to be a global cultural shift in how people think and act. In our visually dominant society, listening to the state of the environment can reconnect us with nature. Sound can transport us to a place and time and elicit an empathetic response that can be extremely powerful in climate action. What if we could walk through iconic locations across the world and listen to the Amazon in real time? Would we think differently about conservation? The live hydrophone stream is hosted by the Jupiter Research Foundation in Puako, Hawaii. Sound and vision mixed and live-captured by Kai Mohrholz and Alex O’ Donovan at Music Technology Welcome Concert Friday 4th March 2016 Basil Jones Orchestral Hall QCGU.
